for the better
Do you have a roadmap for this moment of transformational change?
Moments of change come with huge opportunities—and huge risks. Do you have everything mapped out?
Will your processes adapt and scale to your future state?
Is your organizational structure going to enable you to deliver on your promises?
What will your institutional strategy look like after this big change?
Is everyone in your organization working together to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime moment?
I help institutions capitalize on transformational moments to grow and evolve. With my support, you can ensure that your organization will make the most of an opportunity.
Don’t squander this oppportunity: make sure you change for the better.
How Can I Help?
I have expertise across many categories:
Development/Philanthropy
Operational Revenue
Marketing/Communications
Analytics and Research
Interpretation
Exhibition Planning
Strategy
Board Management
I specialize in projects that cross siloes and span institutions. Here are a few examples:
-
Reopening a museum during Covid was a unique opportunity. While our primary goal was to keep visitors and staff safe, we were also able to capitalize on this moment to implement a number of long-wished-for changes. From museum hours to digital member cards to new exhibitions processes, this crisis launched the Art Institute years forward.
Crises are opportunities: just because you have to be reactive to current circumstances doesn't mean you can't be proactive on other fronts.
-
There are few projects as high risk and high reward as a new building. The project itself is complex and the opening even more so, but the real test is daily operations. After witnessing a launch of a beautiful new building, I also witnessed its immediate and ongoing operational failure. Mitigation took years. Don’t let this happen to your project: Make sure the right teams are at the table to help build daily operations into your roadmap.
-
Crisis management is, regretfully, something most institutions must tackle at some point.
When your organization’s name is all over the press, and board members are firing off angry messages, and staff is in an uproar, it’s not time to panic. This is an opportunity just like any planned transformational moment. If you handle it well, with a clear roadmap and a disciplined decision-making process, your organization will emerge stronger.

When the Obama Portraits went on tour, we knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reach new audiences. I worked with departments across the museum to ensure that we maximized attendance and created a visitor experience that was warm and welcoming--despite mask and social distancing requirements.
When you're handed a gift, make the most of it by getting everyone involved. You might find that innovation emerges from unexpected quarters.
About Hilary
I embrace growth and change in both my professional and personal life.
I’m a cultural omnivore who is always planning her next trip. I’m currently learning German and am not afraid to use it. I graduated with degrees from Wellesley College and the University of Chicago and regardless of what you might have heard about them, I managed to have a great time at both. And despite having been a Vice President at the second largest art museum in the country, the leadership I’m most proud of is keeping my book club running smoothly for 15 years and counting.
I’ve worked in non-profits for two decades and most recently served as Vice President for Planning and Strategy at the Art Institute of Chicago. In that role, I led projects that spanned the museum, ranging from reopening the museum during COVID to overhauling the exhibition planning process to overseeing the development of a strategic plan. “Other duties as assigned” was my sweet spot. Since then, I’ve helped organizations like the Whitney Museum of American Art prepare to meet current and future challenges. I thrive in ambiguous moments and expertly navigate change, and I care deeply about the success of non-profits.
You’re a results-oriented senior leader at a non-profit looking to maximize your limited resources to meet your goals and deliver on your mission.
You know that the status quo was meant to be challenged. You welcome change and opportunities to think differently.
